ChoViva in Asia

Aeon brings ChoViva to Asia: First launch in Japan

After successful rollouts in seven European countries, the cocoa-free chocolate alternative is now available outside of Europe for the first time.

Planegg, September 2025 – Japanese retail giant Aeon is expanding its range with an international innovation: Starting September 2025, Aeon will bring the cocoa-free chocolate alternative ChoViva to Asia for the very first time. Following a successful test run in summer – a limited-edition biscuit with ChoViva – three bars with ChoViva are now listed in Japan.

ChoViva is now available in eight countries and across more than 70 products – including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Japan. Compared to conventional chocolate, ChoViva uses sunflower seeds instead of cocoa and saves around 80% CO₂.

Dr. Maximilian Marquart, CEO of Planet A Foods, comments: "Japan marks our very first market entry outside of Europe. The launch with Aeon is a strategically important milestone to establish our cocoa-free chocolate internationally and to further raise awareness of sustainable alternatives in Asia."

Product highlights for Japan:

  • Marketed under Aeon’s Topvalu private-label brand
  • Three varieties: Cereal Puffs, Plain, Hazelnut
  • Available from September 2025 in various Aeon stores nationwide

ChoViva has proven itself as an ingredient for partner products, collaborating with brands such as Riegelein, Treets, Lambertz, Griesson-de Beukelaer, Peter Kölln, Lufthansa, and Deutsche Bahn. In retail, Planet A Foods has worked with Kaufland, Rewe/Penny, Aldi, and Lidl on private-label innovations. Applications range from bars to cookies, snacks and ice cream.
